Race Report - Uptown Pumpkin Dash 5k

Race Report - Uptown Pumpkin Dash 5k Presented by Honda Marysville

First I want to thank all the 397 participants who came out for our very first Thanksgiving Day race in Marysville.  We were totally blown aware by your support of this event.  Before I go onto the remainder of the report I don't want to forget to thank our wonderful volunteers, the City of Marysville and all our sponsors.

When the idea for a race on Thanksgiving Day came to us we weren't sure whether it would be an incredible success or a collosial failure.  Over the summer I went to just about all the local races in the county to promote the event.  Each time I told people about the event they were very supportive of the idea which made me feel very encouraged and though I was being told by people that they would be coming to the event, signups were extremely slow.  In fact at one point the city asked me how many registrations I had and I timidly had to tell them I had 18!  However I cautioned them not to look into the low number as history shows that registrations tend to pick up closer to the event as schedules start to get clearer and people start knowing what they are doing.  Slowly the registrations go a bit better, but weren't very stellar.  Time came to put our order in for shirts.  By this time we had about 70 and I added a few more here and there, considered the number of volunteers then padded that number - great let's order 125.  After placing the order registrations continued to grow - okay let's order another 30, registrations continued to grow - okay let's order another 50 - orders closed.  The vendor closed orders so that we could receive our shirts by November 23, 2 days before the event.  Registrations continued to grow.  As you know if you competed in this event we ran out of shirts before race day.  Many who were able to pickup their race packets early were able to get a shirt, while everyone else didn't.  Hopefully by now you received your shirt in the mail.  At the time of writing this report we are about 98% complete and will get the rest of the shirts to everyone after Christmas.  Thanks for your patience.

Jumping forward to after the race, I want to thank everyone who gave me words of encouragement and support for this event.  We are definately on for 2012 and will work to make it an even better event.  I did receive some good feedback about the event and many ideas to improve on it.  All suggestions will be taken into considerations and the best one's will be incorporated into the race in 2012.
